What Is Start Proud

Start Proud aims to connect LGBTQ+ students with employers, while promoting the development of LGBTQ+ professionals, and celebrating the achievements and service of those in the community.

We facilitate the professional development of LGBTQ+ students as they transition from school to career in order to build a national network within the community. Our vision is to empower members of the LGBTQ+ community to be Canada’s leaders of tomorrow, where all institutions embrace inclusiveness within the workplace and diversity within the workforce.


About the Role:

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, as the Human Resource Manager, you will play a central role in fostering a thriving, inclusive volunteer workplace at Start Proud. Your significant contribution to developing and executing our HR policies, managing our talent acquisition and retention efforts, and supporting volunteer growth and engagement will be greatly appreciated. This versatile role lies at the heart of Start Proud's organizational structure and is vital to optimizing our workforce strategy, fueling our mission-driven growth, and propelling our success narrative. Your strategic leadership and empathetic approach will profoundly impact our team dynamics, boost our organizational efficacy, and significantly contribute to our ongoing journey.


In this role you will:

  • Develop, implement, and review HR strategies, policies, and procedures, ensuring they align with Start Proud's mission, vision, and values, as well as legal requirements;
  • Oversee the entire recruitment and selection process, from job posting and candidate screening to interviews and onboarding, to ensure we attract and retain the best talent;
  • Provide support and guidance to management and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations; and
  • Lead initiatives aimed at volunteer development and engagement, including training, career development programs, and initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion within the organization.

Required Skills and Experience:

Experience:

  • Human Resources Experience: Experience in a human resources role is generally required, including experience with recruitment, volunteer relations, and HR strategy development.
  • Experience with Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives: Given that Start Proud is an organization focused on supporting LGBTQ+ professionals, experience with diversity and inclusion initiatives would be particularly valuable. This could involve developing policies, providing training, or managing diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • While Start Proud will always work to up skill members of our volunteer team, due to the scope and importance of this role it is only open to experienced individuals.

Skills:

  • People Management Skills: The ability to manage, lead, and develop staff is critical. This involves the ability to resolve conflicts, motivate others, and foster a positive, inclusive work environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to negotiate, mediate, and convey policies and procedures effectively to all levels of the organization.

Commitment

  • ~5-15 hours per month
  • Mandatory attendance at team team meetings
